Byodoin Temple, established in 1053, is a Buddhist temple renowned for its iconic Phoenix Hall, depicted on the Japanese 10-yen coin. The temple’s layout, centered around the Aji Pond, is designed to represent the Pure Land Paradise on earth.

Peak Season for Autumn Leaves

The autumn foliage at Byodoin typically reaches its peak from mid-November to early December.
Approximately 200 Iroha Momiji (Japanese maple) trees turn vibrant shades of red and orange, adorning the Phoenix Hall and the area around Aji Pond.

• Around Aji Pond:
Enjoy the stunning reflection of the Phoenix Hall and the autumn leaves on the water’s surface.

• Front Plaza of Phoenix Hall:
Experience the contrast between the Phoenix Hall and the colorful foliage from the front.

• Southern Side of the Temple Grounds:
This spot offers a panoramic view of the Phoenix Hall amidst the autumn colors.

Special Event: Nighttime Illumination

From November 16 to December 1, 2024, on weekends, a special nighttime viewing event titled “Zuiko Shokan—Autumn Illumination” will be held.
Visitors can enjoy the enchanting scenery of the illuminated Phoenix Hall and autumn leaves.
