Today, I’m sharing my visit to the Chugen Mantoro, a special lantern festival at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, known as a signature summer tradition in Nara Prefecture. Held only on August 14th and 15th each year, as well as on Setsubun (the day marking the change of seasons), this extraordinary event lights up around 3,000 lanterns throughout the shrine grounds, creating a mystical and enchanting atmosphere.
Let me take you through the experience and my impressions of this event, which I attended on August 15th.

The grounds of Kasuga Taisha Shrine house around 3,000 lanterns—2,000 stone lanterns and 1,000 hanging lanterns. During this festival, all of these lanterns are lit, with prayers for the fulfillment of wishes. Since it is only held three times a year, it’s truly a precious event.
I’ve attended this festival several times in the past, always on August 15th.
Why the 15th? Because on the same day, Todaiji Temple, also in Nara, holds its own Mantoro Ceremony, where countless lanterns are lit, creating a beautiful spectacle as well.
Access to Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Located at the far end of Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine is a bit of a walk from the train station (up a gentle slope). It’s quite convenient to take a bus from JR Nara Station to the front of Nara Park to make the journey easier.
Even after dark, many deer were roaming around Nara Park as we walked towards Kasuga Taisha.
Stone lanterns lining the mountain path to the shrine were also lit, adding to the atmosphere.
We arrived around 7:30 pm and found ourselves waiting in line to enter. It took about 10 minutes to get into the shrine grounds.
The entrance fee was 500 yen.
The hanging lanterns within the shrine grounds were all lit, and it was truly beautiful.
The lanterns displayed various designs, each unique in style.
Conclusion
This was my experience at the Chugen Mantoro at Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara.
Since it’s such a rare event held only a few days each year, I highly recommend visiting if you have the chance.
The stunning lights and serene atmosphere make it a memorable experience.
