Overview of Gio-ji Temple

Gio-ji is a temple of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, located in Saga, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto.
Founded towards the end of the Heian Period, it is a historical temple that appears in the Tale of the Heike.

The temple’s name, Gio-ji, comes from Gio, a beloved Shirabyoshi (a type of female entertainer) of Taira no Kiyomori.
After Kiyomori’s affections waned, Gio retired from the world here with her mother and sister.

The Charm of Gio-ji Temple

The greatest charm of Gio-ji lies in its serene atmosphere and the beautiful moss garden.
Especially during the autumn leaf season, the contrast between the green moss and the brightly colored leaves creates a stunning scene.

Within the temple grounds, there is a thatched-roof hermitage, whose simple presence further enhances the beauty of the autumn leaves. In the Buddha hall, wooden statues of Gio, her sister, and Taira no Kiyomori are enshrined, allowing visitors to feel the deep history of the place.

Best Time to See the Autumn Leaves

The best time to visit Gio-ji for autumn leaves is usually from mid-November to late November. This timing is expected to be the same in 2024, although it can vary slightly depending on weather conditions.

Particularly noteworthy is the beauty of the fallen leaves after the peak season has passed. The moss garden is covered in bright red fallen leaves, offering a carpet-like scenery that you can enjoy.
